Ganglion impar infiltration and radio frequency

WHAT IS GANGLION IMPAR INFILTRATION AND RADIO FREQUENCY?

The ganglion impar is a nerve structure that receives the sensitivity of the perineal viscera, urethra, rectum and coccyx.
Anatomically, it is in the internal area of the junction between the sacrum and coccyx.

WHEN IS IT RECOMMENDED?

It is indicated for cases of

  • coccygodynia
  • proctalgia (pain in the anus or rectum)
  • vulvar pain
  • chronic pain post-surgery
  • pain in the perineal region

WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?

This technique is performed with the patient lying face down and after disinfecting the area and administering a small dose of sedation, the puncture region is identified, which is in the sacral-coccygeal junction.

It is performed with radiological control and a small amount of radiological contrast is used.

A small amount of local anaesthetic is injected in order to carry out a diagnostic test and check whether the pain improves after this injection. In the latter case it would be considered to repeat the procedure to perform radiofrequency.
