Epidurolysis

WHAT IS EPIDUROLYSIS?

It is an interventional technique for spinal pain, suspecting here may be fibrosis of the epidural membrane surrounding the medulla and its roots with affectation of several of them, mainly in the post-surgery context.

WHEN IS IT RECOMMENDED?

  • Affectations of several roots with post-surgical irradiated pain.
  • Affections of several roots secondary to canal stenosis.

WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?

The patient lies face down with sedation and the entrance region is disinfected. This is done via a caudal epidural approach. Performed with local anaesthesia on the skin and light sedation.

The puncture point is lower at the spinal column level, above the gluteal groove at the sacral hiatus level. It is located through radioscopy and the probe is moved to the roots one by one to treat them with radiographic control and electro-stimulation.

The treatment consists of a mechanical effect by introducing a volume of serum that distends and tears the fibrosis trapping the root, a chemical effect by administering medication on the root and a thermal effect by applying a radiofrequency treatment on the same root.
